Smoke-Free Communities
Hospitality workers and musicians breathe more secondhand smoke than any other type of worker. According to no-smoke.org, during an 8-hour shift in a smoky establishment, workers inhale carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, formaldehyde, arsenic, benzene, and hydrogen cyanide.
The American Lung Association of Colorado is working to protect Coloradans from secondhand smoke. ALAC offers technical assistance and information to individuals, community organizations, and elected officials interested in making their community smoke-free.
Nationwide, more than 35,000 people die from heart disease, and 3,000 more from lung disease due to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains nearly 4,000 chemical compounds and it is classified as a class A carcinogen.
Help to protect people from the dangers of secondhand smoke in public places and workplaces, including bars and restaurants. Endorse your community's smoke-free effort.
