Asthma Education For Adults

The American Lung Association headquarters awarded the Colorado office a capaci
ty building grant to pilot Breathe Well, Live Well (BWLW)- An Asthma Education Program for Adults during fiscal year 2009.

BWLW is a national American Lung Association program adapted from a validated clinic-based intervention developed by the University of Alabama (Winning Against Asthma, 1986). BWLW utilizes a “train the trainer” model that identifies and trains other individuals (school nurses, health department personnel, nonprofit agency staff, etc.) to provide the program in community settings that reach clinics, community organizations, churches, worksites, hospitals, etc.

Targeted workshop participants – adults living with asthma – learn asthma management techniques and are encouraged to share lessons learned with their healthcare providers, family members, and friends. BWLW is offered free of charge and is available in Spanish.

In Colorado, 281,591 adults have asthma. Asthma ranks within the top ten prevalent conditions causing limitation of activity and costs the nation $19.7 billion in healthcare costs annually.

Our goal is to create a stronger community, as well as restore good lung health for Colorado at large.
